EU Sales via Amazon and Ebay

Amazon and Ebay sales

I have double checked and both Ebay and Amazon fall under the IOSS scheme. This means that when you sell a product via either ebay or amazon to an EU customer they are responsible for collecting and paying the VAT to the relevant authorities. This only applies to items valued at 150euros or less, it is worth noting that items of this value or less are no longer subject to import duty either unless they are restricted items such as alcohol for example.

Your responsibilities When you make a sale to the EU via Amazon or Ebay you will need to make sure that you include either Ebay or Amazon's IOSS identification number on the import documentation to ensure that the import tax and customs duty is not charged as the item enters the EU.

EU Sales via your website

If you sell goods to the EU via your website you will need to register for VAT under the IOSS (Import One Stop Shop) scheme.

If you are based outside the EU, you can choose which country to register for the OSS in, but if you store stock in any EU country then you need to choose a country where you hold stock to register for the scheme. This means that if you continue to hold stock in Germany that you would need to register for the scheme there.

If you don't have a base within the EU then you will need to appoint an EU established intermediary who will be jointly liable for any import VAT due. The intermediary is a taxable person (usually an accountant) established in an EU country who is responsible for declaring and paying VAT on behalf of a non-EU seller. Norway is currently the only country that does not require an intermediary to be appointed. If you are no longer planning to hold stock in Germany then personally I would look to appoint an intermediary in an English speaking country to prevent any language barriers.
