Successful marketing is fundamental to the success of a business. Regardless of how wonderful a product or service is, without an effective and well-targeted marketing strategy and associated sales, the business will not be a success. To make money, the business needs sales and to make sales the business needs to have a successful marketing strategy.

Here we look at how to set up and implement a marketing plan and what should be included in it, as well as considering which type of medium would be best suited to the organisation when sending out marketing messages.

  • Successful marketing is fundamental to the overall success of the business.

  • A good marketing strategy will reach all potential customers.

  • A business should have a clear marketing strategy which should be linked to the business strategy.

  • A SWOT analysis should be carried out to identify the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats of the business.

  • The marketing plan represents the action plan for delivery of the marketing strategy. The plan will set out the aims and objectives and the ways in which they will be achieved.

  • Marketing objectives should be SMART.

  • To ensure delivery of the marketing plan, a realistic implementation schedule should be drawn up and adhered to.

  • A clear and realistic budget should be prepared and monitored to prevent cost overruns.

  • There are various ways to promote the business to its customers and each business needs to identify those most relevant to it.

  • Marketing campaigns must comply with the Data Protection Act 1998, the Privacy and Electronic Communications (EC Directive) Regulations 2003 as amended, and relevant marketing regulations.
